Reflections from the 10th Anniversary FreeHer March & Rally: Capturing Moments of Inspiration
Reflecting on an incredible day at the 10th-anniversary #FreeHer March & Rally in Washington, D.C. A heartfelt thank you to Andrea James, and the National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls, for her unwavering leadership and vision that continues to inspire us all.
Gratitude also goes out to Shalamar Ward and Antonio MoKowledge Carrington Bey, for partnering with Day 1 Pictures to capture such powerful moments throughout the day with such a large crown.
As an advocate, leader, and photographer, this day resonates deeply with me. Getting up at 5 AM and returning home at 11 PM was a small sacrifice for the opportunity to support and stand alongside the incredible women leading this movement. The energy and unity felt as we marched and rallied together are indescribable.
Running into so many respected leaders from across the country, including close colleagues (shout out to Jessica Sandoval ) each contributing in their own way to this cause, was incredibly enriching. It's moments like these that fuel my commitment and remind me why we continue to push forward.
As a man & leader in this movement, it’s important for me to reflect on how best to support the women leading this charge. At this critical time when women, especially women of color, are reclaiming their voices and their spaces, it's crucial for us as men, particularly Black men, to bear witness, stand in solidarity, and provide protection.
This is more than just presence; it’s about active support and creating safe spaces for these voices to lead. It’s about listening, learning, and being there—not just in moments of visibility but consistently and earnestly.
As a father, it underscores the world I envision for my children—one of equity, respect, and justice. Let’s keep pushing forward, together, in support of the remarkable women leading this movement.
